Computer not to access the Internet through a web browser?
I’m not sure, but I think Firefox still uses the IE internet connection preferences. I’d try going to the control panel, clicking “Network and internet”, then click “Internet Options.” A dialogue box will pop up click the connections tab.
In this box I would check a few things. First, that not spyware has snuck a proxy or script on your system (which probably would have persisted through the upgrade). To check this, click on the “LAN settings” button. Make sure everything is configured they way you want it. If you don’t know, check the box next to “Automatically detect settings.” Uncheck the box next to “use internet configuration script” and uncheck the box that says “Use a proxy server…” Click the “OK” button to save any changes you just made.
If your browser still doesn’t work, try restarting your computer to make sure that the changes have taken affect.
You might try clicking the “setup” button in that same internet options box that you found the “LAN settings” button in, and use the wizard to create a new connection.
I think it is possible that some spyware could still be hidden and be blocking tcp (or all traffic) on the ports used by browsers. To ensure that your router settings aren’t at fault, you could could temporarily DMZ the IP of the machine you are having trouble with.
Sorry, I know there is a ton of stuff in this answer, but I hope something helps. Also, someone smarter than me could probably tell you if repairing the IP stack might help (I’m pretty sure windows has a command to do this).
