How to use both Windows XP and Ubuntu on the same computer?
Generally it is fine to run 2 operating systems on the same physical hard drive, but it is better to run them on seperate physical hard drives. If it is possible for you to get another laptop hard drive, or maybe invest in an external hard drive just to be safe.
multiple operating systems do not affect a computers stability, in fact it’s the individual operating system itself that is either more stable or less stable.
Partitioning is just dividing up the space hard drive (much like apartments) it doesn’t affect a systems stability at all.
I have dual booted Ubuntu with Windows to both installed primary & secondary hdd’s and also to external hdd’s, if you can install any OS then installing Ubuntu should be fairly easy. There are many tutorials online that will help you through this I will include a few links that I believe are the most helpful.

Difference between Debian and Ubuntu

Difference between Debian and Ubuntu:
I would suggest u try Sidux which is based on Debian Sid that is Debian unstable.
There r 3 versions
Debian Stable or Etch I think, this has all the stable tested packages and is a bit out of date.
Debian Lenny or testing contains newer packages still in testing.
Debian Sid or unstable is bleeding edge.
What Sidux does is takes Debian Sid’s repos and check their updates and makes a stable distro out of unstable.
For compiz fusion u will have to join SIdux’s or Debians forums.

this topic deals with your specific error..
Did you select “Check CD for defects” option before attempting to install Ubuntu?
Try the Alternate CD which provides text based installation.
*Note: Alternative CD can’t be used as a Live CD.
